Founding QA Engineer

Builder expectation

You will not only find and report issues. You are expected to ship small product improvements and bug fixes directly: diagnose, implement, test, open the pull request, and own the change through release.

The role

You will be Bluefyn's first dedicated QA hire and will own quality end to end: manual testing, test strategy, automated coverage, and small fixes shipped yourself, with AI agents in your daily work. This is a hands-on builder role, not a ticket-only QA position. As the company grows, you will define the quality function, hire the team, and lead QA while remaining technical and close to the product.

What you'll do

• Own the quality strategy. Define risk-based test plans and release criteria across the billing engine, FX benchmark calculation engine, event processing, ledger and AR workflows, integrations, and AI-enabled product surfaces.
• Perform hands-on manual testing. Test new features and releases yourself, including exploratory, negative, boundary, permissions, API, failure, and recovery scenarios. Manual testing is a core part of this role.
• Build the test system. Maintain structured, reusable test cases with traceability to requirements and risks, and build API, integration, and focused end-to-end suites that run in CI.
• Turn approved financial scenarios into regression coverage. Product and Engineering provide the economic rules and reference outputs for FX, billing, ledger, and balance calculations. You turn them into deterministic fixtures and tests.
• Own defects and release quality. Reproduce issues, isolate root causes, make risk visible, convert incidents into permanent coverage, and define quality gates with engineering.
• Partner from discovery to delivery. Challenge ambiguity, sharpen acceptance criteria, improve testability, and prevent defects before implementation.
• Build the future function. Establish standards, tooling, and operating rhythm, then hire, mentor, and lead the QA team as Bluefyn scales.

What we're looking for

• 5+ years of hands-on QA/QE experience in financial software. Fintech, payments, banking, or billing, testing systems where incorrect behavior or data creates customer, financial, or operational risk.
• Excellent manual test design. You move beyond the happy path, identify hidden state and lifecycle risks, and document clear, reproducible cases.
• Hands-on engineering competence. You are productive with API and integration testing in Python, TypeScript, or a comparable language, work confidently with Git and CI, and can navigate an unfamiliar codebase and safely ship small fixes yourself.
• An AI-native working style. You already run coding agents for real work and understand tool calls, context, permissions, orchestration, evaluation, guardrails, human approval, and common failure modes.
• Practical fintech understanding. You know transaction lifecycles, pricing, fees, FX, billing, ledgers, and balances well enough to design meaningful tests. Deep financial calculation expertise is not required.
• High ownership and startup range. Small inconsistencies bother you until you understand the cause, you communicate risk clearly, and you are comfortable in a fast-moving stealth startup with broad ownership and limited process.

Nice to have

• First-QA-hire experience. You have built a QA function or quality system from scratch.
• Financial calculation validation experience. You have independently checked billing, FX, fee, ledger, or balance calculations and turned them into reusable coverage.
• Early leadership experience. You have mentored engineers or testers and can grow into formal team leadership.
